Is it ok to install Weep Shield in the direct sun? One side of my house gets the afternoon heat.
Answer: Weep Shield contains a UV resistant additive that protects the material from getting brittle over time. It’s ok to install it on the sides of your house directly facing the sun and does not violate the warranty.
I have ants climbing into my weep-holes. What can I do about that?
Answer: If you have already installed Weep Shield, squeeze the tabs to remove it from the hole. Grab your favorite bug spray, and wet the inside of the weep-hole. Once it dries, re-install Weep Shield. You may also need to go to the source and exterminate the ant mound.
Does the fit have to be super-tight when I install Weep Shield? There is a small gap on top and bottom.
Answer: It’s ok to leave a small gap on each end, less than 1/8 inch. Most pests can’t get through holes smaller than that. If the gap is larger than that, consider cutting two Weep Shield parts and install the two large pieces stacked to fill in the hole. See our Installation Instructions page.
Can you paint Weep Shield?
Answer: Yes, you can prime and paint Weep Shield any color you prefer, so it will match the brick or mortar as desired. We have used acrylic spray paint and it works well. But we prefer the natural black color because it blends in nicely with weep-holes!
What if the brick weep-hole opening is too narrow, and Weep Shield won’t fit?
Answer: If the opening is less than ¼” wide, Weep Shield will not go into this tight of slot. If it did, it would block air passage. Some air needs to flow through the weep-hole for it to be effective.
What can I do if the brick weep-hole opening is too wide for Weep Shield to fit? It is too loose.
Answer: Weep Shield normally fits the most likely range of weep-hole openings, up to ¾ inch. However, in the unlikely event you have an opening wider than that, it is possible to squeeze the outer tabs and insert the entire cover into the hole. This should still allow for enough air to pass freely.
Why does the uninstalled width of Weep Shield vary? Some parts come wider than others straight from the package.
Answer: Due to the high-speed molding process, the parts are ejected when they are still hot. This may cause a minor variation in the vee-shape width once the part cools, typically 1/16 inch or less but this should not affect installation at all.
Can you trim Weep Shield to a different height?
Answer: Weep Shield has a built-in perforation or guide that helps you to cut the right height needed with plain scissors, whether you need a short-stacked or tall-stacked height. In the unlikely event you need a special height, you can cut Weep Shield to any other height desired, but it may be more difficult to do.
